Acetyl-L-Tyrosine

Acetyl-L-Tyrosine is the N-acetylated derivative of L-tyrosine, a non-essential aromatic amino acid biosynthesised from phenylalanine. The acetyl group grafted onto the alpha-amino position increases aqueous solubility relative to the free amino acid, an attribute documented across pharmaceutical literature since the 1970s. In LUCID, the active is produced by microbial fermentation of plant-derived carbohydrates, then chemically acetylated and purified to a minimum assay of 98 percent by HPLC. Residual solvents and heavy metals are quantified to European Pharmacopoeia limits. The molecular formula is C11H13NO4, molar mass 223.23 g/mol, and the compound presents as a white crystalline powder, odourless, freely soluble in water at ambient temperature. We elected the acetylated form over free tyrosine for one reason: solubility. Free L-tyrosine crystallises rapidly in aqueous media, which complicates uniform capsule dispersion and, in academic dissolution work, has produced dose-response curves that are inconsistent between subjects. The N-acetyl variant remains in solution across the gastric pH range, delivering a more reproducible plasma trajectory (Van Spronsen et al., 1996, Metabolism). The 650 mg calibration reflects the mid-band of the range studied for cognitive-task work under load conditions in the literature (Deijen and Orlebeke, 1994, Brain Research Bulletin), scaled to a three-capsule morning ritual. We chose a milligram figure, not a percentage of daily intake, because the compound is a conditionally required nutrient whose intake varies with diet and metabolic demand.
