L-Theanine

What it is
A non-proteinogenic amino acid unique to the leaves of Camellia sinensis (green tea), first isolated by Sakato in 1949. Included here as pharmaceutical-grade L-theanine (L-enantiomer, standardized 98%), produced by enzymatic fermentation.
What it does
Documented to cross the blood-brain barrier within approximately 30 minutes. Studied in the academic literature for its association with alpha-wave rhythm and its modulation of GABA, dopamine and serotonin pathways.
Why this choice
The paired complement to caffeine. Included at a 3.6:1 ratio to the 70 mg of caffeine — the proportion validated by Owen et al. (2008, Nutritional Neuroscience) for composed attention. Focus without nervous edge.
L-Theanine is one of the ten compounds in LUCID.
